Our Curriculum
Characteristics of Effective Learning
To support learning and development, we have a rigorous, exciting, engaging, and varied curriculum at The Chelsea Nursery. We ensure that our environment and delivery of the curriculum incorporates the three characteristics of effective teaching and learning:
- Playing and Exploring
- Active Learning
- Creating and Thinking Critically
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum applies to children from birth to the end of Reception. It is based upon four principles:
A Unique Child: every child is a competent learner
Positive Relationships: children learn to be strong and independent.
Enabling Environments: supporting and extending a child’s development
Learning and Development: three prime and four specific areas of learning and development
Prime Areas (universal and independent of specific areas)
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Specific Areas
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Art and Design
Children who are secure in the prime areas will have a firm foundation to master skills within the specific areas of learning.
