We Love Forest School!

We are all-weather warriors at The Chelsea Nursery and wrap up warm in our waterproofs and warm layers for our weekly sessions at Barnes Common, led by trained Forest School leaders.

It is more than just nature walks or outdoor playtime, it is a child-centred learning environment that embraces the natural world as a classroom allowing children to explore, play, and learn at their own pace.

As well as access to the outdoors there are a range of educational and developmental benefits:

  • Social and Emotional Well-being:  Immersion in nature fosters a sense of calm and reduces stress, providing opportunities for collaboration, communication, and social interaction, building confidence and resilience.
  • Cognitive Development: Exploring the textures, shapes, and sounds of the outdoors stimulates the senses and encourages problem-solving skills. Building dens, climbing trees, and navigating their environment all contribute to critical thinking and creativity.
  • Physical Development:  Forest School provides ample space for energetic play, promoting gross and fine motor skills. From balancing on logs to building fires (under adult supervision!), children develop strength, coordination, and dexterity.
  • Environmental Awareness:  By spending time in nature, children develop a deep appreciation for the environment. They learn about different ecosystems, plant and animal life, and the importance of sustainability.
  • Self-Esteem and Confidence:  Forest School empowers children to take risks in a safe and supportive environment, mastering new skills, and working independently contribute to a strong sense of self-esteem and confidence.
  • Lifelong Learning:  Forest School fosters a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom walls. Children develop a sense of curiosity and a desire to explore the world around them.
